Re: vin # on escort trailer
I had two here that had foil decals with all the trailer info and vin on them. Both decals were on the front outer side of the left frame rail. Both came from junked Bayliners.
Neither trailer had any paperwork so the state here also assigned a new number.
I've owned over 30 boat trailers, so far only two came to me with either an original certificate of origin or title. Titles aren't required for small trailers here, you lose the certificate of origin when you first register a new trailer, from then on the only paperwork you have is the registration card. Most people forget this and discard the old registration and the legal path of paperwork is gone. They also made it harder to legally transfer a trailer with it's original registration, they require the buyer to posses the last registration, and a signed, notarized bill of sale with the date of sale and VIN number on it. The notarized part is what makes most people just register the trailer as home made. Its cheaper in the long run since you do not need the notary fee, title transfer fee, and the tag really doesn't designate which trailer it's for. Those with multiple trailers usually only have one tag. Local zoning is cracking down on that by passing laws banning unregistered vehicles. They are requiring that every vehicle in the yard be registered, boats and trailers.
