I don’t usually care about vintage motors but this one has me stumped. The Model number on the block is : J0003200. There’s a serial number also: 406554 or 40655A. Short shaft, remote setup.

What has me interested is the lower unit. It is the classic 2 piece and the lower half has a built in, triangular hydrofoil. I’ve looked up and down for anything that resembles this setup and come up short.

I did find a number on the intake that relates to a 1967 40 hp. The lower unit on that model is not the same. All the typical model numbers are not present like we are used to seeing and looked up.

I have not been on here for awhile but hope to start up again. Vintage is not my forte but i got a trailer full of vintage small OMC motors, some complete, some not.

Please point me in the right direction. If I’m going to part out or sell this, should know what it is.

Put up a pic. If it is what I think it is some commercial models had that. Its purpose was prop protection also found on some.military models.

Probably 1976 40 hp.. the "A" suffix is for the special skeg ..

Those wings must have been some engineer's pet project. Yes, they were supposed to be hydrofoils to help get it up on plane. All they really did was slow it down---and gather up a bushel of weeds in Florida lakes. For that reason, Florida fishermen cursed them and sawed them off.

Actually, the wings came and went a couple of times. Sorry, I don't remember the details, but the first time may have been on a 33hp. They were cursed back then too. Eventually, OMC got tired of hearing the cursing and removed the wings for good..

Correct some commercial motors used that built in foil.------Just picked up a 76 model 20 HP Johnson ( yes a 20 HP ) and it has a small version of that foil.----Not sure if it was cut down from original size at this time.

I believe it’s about 10 years before that motor posted above. I’ll get a pic up tomorrow as I’m out of town at the moment. I don’t have the cowl but can tell you cowl has to be very large as there’s a ton of room around the motor. I swear I saw a 33hp cowl laying around near that motor when I loaded it up. As far as I can tell, the starter and carb is gone.

Anyone have a explanation for the goofy Model/serial number?

The built in foil is about 4-5” triangle on each side.

If you look you will see 40655A is a 1976 40hp and nothing goofy about it.. I have a 40604A.. It is a rope start, long shaft tiller... 40 is the hp 6 is the year 1976 .. The last 2 numbers stand for shaft length and electric start I think..

Here is mine running on my homemade flushing device.. The paint is faded and you can see a touch of blue on the extension.. Does it have 2 external ignition coils on the the side of the head?

Looks like all of you were correct. After further research, the A stands for the foil lower unit. Must have missed that on my first review of the parts diagram.

Well, at least now I can part it out with confidence on what motor it came from.
Thanks all for the help. Until next time.
