back in the day....when it was "win on sunday"....."sell on moday".....what made an engine "race designated?". and if i were to come across one of them, is there any way to visually identify it? (i would just love to get my hands on a vintage "small 15hp or less hp ..if they were made...race motor"....just for a display restoration.)

I think you'll find true racing motors pretty hard to find and expensive.
You might ask around at www.aomci.org.
Usually a race motor would have a special leg/lowerunit with a special prop.
You might look up champion hotrod.mercury quick silver lower unit.
If Chinewalker stops by he may have more specific info. His father raced in the 50s and 60s and Chinewalker may still be racing.

thanks steelespike, i figured they would be a very rare find, but ya just never know what you may come across. when you say "special prop" , do you mean a surfacing prop?
