Well finally I've got my floor ready, I was going to install carpet, but I heard several people recommend nautolex vinyl for the flooring. I was wondering what the pros vs. cons on this subject. I can't make up my mind on carpet vs vinyl any suggestions would be great.

Re: Vinyl vs Carpet?

I think it will come down to how the boat is used. If it will just be a cruise vessel, then carpeting is fine, if there will be fish guts, blood, a lot of dirt dragged in from beachings and such, maybe a non-carpetted floor would be more optimal. Don't discount input from the better half as well. When I just recently reconverted my boat again and mentioned I would be carpeting it, my wife really liked that idea. I had no-skid painted on before, and it would get farely hot to the foot. It was fine when I was out fishing but not so fine when the wife and I would be out doin' our thing. Now with the carpeting, it will be more comfortable. It all comes down to how you will use the boat. Good luck...

i personally believe carpet has no place in a boat. if you must, it should be removeable as a lot of the new higher end boats are doing. carpet is cheaper than doing a good job of finishing the inside of the boat.

I'm solidly in the pro-carpet group. The usual complaint is that it si more difficult to clean whereas the vinyl flooring can simply be hosed off. I don't see hosing off carpet as all that different and the comfort factor makes up for any extra work it might be if you ask me.

If carpet weren't a good option you wouldn't see boat manufacturers using it in what is a very highly competetive market. Yet they all offer carpet and I'd bet that the overwhelming majority of boats sold come with carpet rather than the alternative.

If you're talking about a work boat or a sportfishing boat where you're grinding chum and landing gaffed fish directly onto the floor neither is the preferred material, but that's another story altogether.

It really is about personal preference. My argument is that caring for carpet isn't a big enough factor in and of itself to rule it out as the better option - but that's just my personal preference and I respect those who prefer otherwise. You have to decide for yourself and that's the fun of doing your own project.

Check this out. I have it for my boat. Its one piece, Water rolls off, and drys off very quick. Fish blood, no problem. Its anti slip, comes in different colors. The best thing is, it never holds moisture, and it never smells like mold and mildew. I should have pixs soon. Carpet is nice, as long as its in the house.

http://www.garysupholstery.com/ntomarfloor.html

Re: Vinyl vs Carpet?

thanks for the help, I really wish I could see what the nautolex looks like in a boat. I'm also stuck of what paint to use. I need to be on the water. I've been working on this boat for about 6 months to long.

You can order a free sample of the Nautalex flooring That they'll send you. It almost has that carpet look to it. I never have to worry about a rain storm with that stuff. If thats your boat in the thread, it looks to be black and white, I think the "Shark" color would look good.

If you go with vinyl the Mark has the goods. If you decide to use carpet use R&R Textiles...they are the leading OEM suppliers of carpet to the marine industry. They will sell you carpet direct and send free samples too. You can even design custom removable carpet to your own patterns (but it is a bit pricey). Fill out the form on-line and the swatches will show up at no charge. I am going with glue down, use rubber cement from home depot, it will hold it down, easy to clean up and won't retain water.

R & R Textiles Marine Carpet

I have had boats with and without carpet. I doubt I'll ever have carpet in a boat again, sure you can hose it, but invariably it will get that funky smell!!!
