Virginia boat trailer, no title, how can i obtain one

I bought a boat with the original trailer it came on.
I got the boat title, but not a trailer title.
Ive already retitled the boat in my name, so I know theres no issue/ possibility of being stolen.

I have no contact with the p.o
Whats the process to get a title for it?
Im in Virginia.

Call the agency that registers/titles trailers in VA. Then you get the right answers.

DMV has the procedure for registering it as a home made trailer. Its a PIA but can be done.

ya, im wondering what exactly I have to do.
I asked DMV today while I was there and they didnt sound to sure.
They said.to go on dmv.com and get a affidavit of lieu. So im gna try that, I will post my results for any others wondering.

i just had to do this with my trailer as i also did not have a title.
in IN all you really need is a bill of sale and a police inspection, you get the form at the bmv.
most likely thats all you will need

I purchased a boat & trailer combo in Virginia last year with no trailer title (purchased primarily for the outboard). Made countless calls and visits to DMV and was simply told that you can't purchase a trailer in Virginia without a title. I informed them that I did and they were like a broken record, you can't purchase a trailer in Virginia without a title. There is a procedure that to get a title for a "homemade" trailer but even if I went through the steps including an "inspection" by a "policeman" followed by a trailer VIN installation (my trailer didn't have a VIN #) followed by an homemade trailer application to Richmond. The costs associated with all the forms were going to be close to $200 with no guarantee of title issue. I "transferred" the trailer to a kid who was going to use it as a lake trailer (not going on the road) and put the proceeds towards a trailer that had a title.
FYI - I purchased another boat/trailer/motor back in January that didn't have a trailer title as the Virginia seller had recently purchased the rig from his brother in Georgia. Georgia is a non-title trailer state and it took the seller nearly 5 months to get the Virginia DMV to issue him a title after he produced a notarized copy of the Georgia Bill of Sale along with several VA DMV applications. The VA seller agreed to let me withhold some of the sale proceeds until he produced a clean trailer title. That way the pressure was on the seller to produce the title. Good Luck!

talk to some of the locals that deal in used boats and trailers like Budget Boats in Chesapeake and see what they do-or if they will swap with you. Best to go in person so they know you aren't setting them up.

The answers you will get from DMV here will be inconsistent.

I live in VA and was looking at buying a boat from out of state that did not have a title for the trailer. The information that I found online and from the VA DMV made the process for getting this trailer titled in VA so onerous that I decided not to buy the boat. The simplest thing to do is simply buy another trailer in VA (or somewhere nearby, last trailer I bought was from MD).

DMV told me.the same thing, " you can not buy a trailer with no title"....as I stared at them in awe. I also did buy one so now what? lol

I'm gonna fill out a form from DMV that is pretty "simple ". It basically checks to see if it's stolen etc. If everything is good, the send you title tags reg etc.
BUT you do have to send the money FIRST, when you send the form. Go figure huh?

I'm gonna try this and let everyone know what
happens.
Worse case scenario, I happen to own a tow truck, ill just tow it with my lights on

I found the VIN # for my boat trailer and I need to get a VA boat trailer title too. thanks

did you find out? thanks, I bought a boat trailer without title either from an 85 years old man. The boat trailer does have a VIN#.

No guys I havent got a title yet, BUT I havent really tried either.
My vin is also faded, im gna just register homade when I get my lazy but to dmv lol
You guys lemme know if you get one before me...lol
