Virtual Memory increases on Pentium 4 pc

After recently adding 1 GB of memory (from 256 KB) to my pentium 4 pc, the response improved for about a week or two. Now it's slowed down, and I get messages every day from Windows SP that the virtual memory needs to increase its pagefile. What gives? I disable the hiberfile so that's not causing it. The only thing I can think of is that I added s/w called GreenBorder and since then, everything is slower and the virtual memory messages started coming. I tried disabling GreenBorder, but that didn't help. Any ideas?

Any ideas?? Yea....uninstall the Green Border sandbox , do a registry sweep to cleanup any leftovers, dump MIE and Outlook. Grab Firefox and Thunderbird, Check out Comodo firewall and antiVirus and/or grab AVG.
If your on a DSL or cable ISP, install a hard firewall (NAT router)
Disable unused services in XP, tighten up your security policies in XP, have a secure ,password protected XP login etc....

...for starters...

BB: OS is Windows XP.
Xcuseme: Thanks for the suggestions. The other thing is I have Norton System Works which doesn't help. I;m not knowlegable enough to know what NAT router would do since I am on DSL. Is it something I can do myself and is it expensive?

I don't know what you have for DSL equipment. If you have only a DSL modem then buy a 4 port router (NAT router) , Linksys, Dlink etc. Should cost approx. 30-40 bucks. It gets connected between the modem and your computer. Some DSL equipment has a built-in router.
I personally don't care for Norton (Symantec) products. They hog resources and can be difficult to remove.
There are many sites explaining how to turn off unused services in Winxp. One such site is http://majorgeeks.com/page.php?id=12

I don't see anything about spyware. Might want to grab Adaware and run that too.

Dump Norton, it's a vacuum of resources.

Re: Virtual Memory increases on Pentium 4 pc

Got rid of GreenBorder and that seemed to help some. I'd been advised that trying to get rid of Norton is nearly impossible. Have adaware and spybot which seem to be useful as well as windows defender. Maybe too much protective s/w, but I'm paranoid about getting infected. Will look into the NAT approach. Thanks again for the advice.

Norton can be removed, but you are often times better to do it in safe mode and use the uninstall utility. In safe mode not all processes load so you can remove it without getting an error about trying to delete a currently running program. I uninstalled a lot of Nortons in my day. ;)
