Visible signs of a spun prop--Hub splines have shifted?

I've been trying to improve the hole shot on my boat--a '74 Glassply with a Merc 3.0 and a pre-Alpha. I bought a very used Quicksilver SS prop just to check out what the RPMs would be at WOT. The old prop was a 48-13700-19 which had been reworked to a 21 pitch with a lot of cup. The new one is a 48-73980-19. When I tried to install the 73980-19, I found that the hub center slid on fine, but it sat right at the end of the splines, leaving no room for the tab washer receiver to engage the splines. This happened even with the thrust hub removed.

I also noticed that the part of the hub that has the splines is not recessed 1/4" into the prop body like it is on my other Quicksilver prop. Could this be by design (i.e. this prop is not designed to fit the pre-Alpha drive) or is it possible that the inner hub has slipped and pressed itself further into the cavity in the outer prop assembly?

I can't use the thing and I want to sell it, but I want to make sure that whoever buys it doesn't run into the same problem I did. Think it needs a re-hub?

There have been several Different configurations in the Prop Hubs over the years,....

my Guess is,.....
You've got the Wrong set of Hub Hardware......

By hub hardware, do you mean the thrust hub and tab washer receiver? I don't think that's it, since I can slide this one on even without the thrust hub and still have no splines showing to engage the tab washer receiver.
