Voltage rectifier and Tach issues

I have a 1994 Evinrude 115hp with the simple rectifier and not the regulator. I had noticed that the voltmeter didn't exceed 12V when operating and pulled the rectifier to check the diodes.

I found one of the diodes had shorted to ground but the other three were fine. When I replaced the rectifier I once again had a volt reading in excess of 13v when running.

After I replaced the rectifier, I noticed that I now have erratic tach readings. It is stable under 2K RPM but once over that it gets erratic. Sometimes pegging out - sometimes going to zero. When I change the speed it sometimes comes back momentarily to the correct RPM but then acts up again.

After the latest use, I took a look at the connections and noticed that I didn't match up the yellow w/gray wires. Could this be the cause of the erratic tach or could this be coincidental timing of a bad tach?

I plan to change the wires but it is a little challenging with it in the water. Just looking for feedback if this could be the cause.

Sounds like there is a regulator there somewhere. You sure you didn't install a rectifier/regulator combo? Try correcting the wires and see what happens.
