I have a 1989 350ci 260hp mercruiser.
My alternator has been getting a little funky on me the past month or so. Every now and then it would start cranking out about 15.5v. Then it would return to normal. Always just right or too high. Well, was heading out this weekend and it started dropping, like no output. Of course as soon as I turned around to head back to the slip it returned to normal.
I pulled the alternator today and noticed that there is a small unit attached to the back of the alternator. I assume this is a voltage regulator which is probably where my problem is. Can this be found seperately? My other question is that there are 2 smaller wires coming from this device and into the harness. What is the function of those wires?
I'm probably going to just have the whole thing rebuilt, I'm more interested in learning what is different about this unit than all the others I've seen.
Thanks
Mark
