i just purchashed a old fishing boat with a 1992 60 horse oil injected engine on it to upgrade my 40 horse nissan. this head is brand new bought and installed last year by the man i bought the boat from. i got it hom and cranked it up and smoke poured out the side of engine i shut it off and removed plastic cover over wires and noticed yellow wires was melted and box they hooked to .i can crank motor and let idle and no problem race the motor and voltage regulator catches on fir inside. i can unplug 1 yellow wire and crank motor and run half throttle no problems.i am going to buy new regulator off here but i dont want to install new one and fry it. what could have caused this problem

For the original clear potted regulators, that behavior is almost considered normal. :D The replacement should be better. A shorted or badly discharged battery might aggravate the problem, but you would expect the same battery to have trouble starting the engine.

hope it helps

Re: voltage regulater burning

Sounds like either the regulator/rectifier assembly has failed, just because its time had come, or perhaps the battery cables got swapped and the reg/rect was fried.

Check your batt cables to make sure they're connected with the correct polarity.

Having batt cables swapped for just a moment will instantly fry a reg/rect.

Either way, don't run it any more, fires inside an outboard are not something you wanna see!! :0
