Voltage Regulator effect Performance ie spark?

I believe I have found the source to my charging problems. The red wire coming out of the voltage regulator is completely corroded. One is on its way but I'm curious if I can expect better performance when I replace it. The motor would draw the voltage down on the batt. it would be around 12.8 until i cranked it up then it would drop to around 12.4. My old motor would put out around 14.5~15 volts, and push the boat much faster (approx. 10 mph faster). Am I being too hopeful?

Your voltage regulator has nothing to do with engine performance. It affects battery charging only.

As for the 10mph variance - are you running the same set-up? Same prop? Same load? Your motor should be spinning on the higher side of 5000-5500 RPM at wide open throttle. If it's not, then you're either over propped or something is amiss with the motor itself.

well the tach isn't hooked up to this new motor but going by ear I had to move it up a hole for it to sound like it was reving right at WOT. I have a higher pitch prop I need to try. My mechanic claims the carbs are fine but I'll probably go through them next week since I'll have the time to spare. I've been told to check the high speed jet.
