Voltage Regulator help

I recently fried a voltage regulator ( plus a few wires)on a 2004 175 sportjet. I replaced the wires and regulator and I noticed the new regulator getting quite hot after 20 min of running the boat. Is this normal and how hot do they get?

If they are not supposed to get hot, what would cause this?

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Re: Voltage Regulator help

I phoned the marine shop yesterday and he suggested testing the stator to see if it is functioning ok. He said to use a voltage meter and probe the yellow wires coming out of the stator to the regulator. He said I should get between 180-220 v , if i Get around 300 v then this may cause the regualtor to overheat.

I am not sure if I did this right as I got a result of 60 v. I hooked up my digital multimeter and put it on AC and to the 750 slot. I then put the red probe into one yellow wire and the red probe to the other and then started the engine.

What I am doing wrong? ( as you can see I am not that knowledgeable in this area)

Thanks

Re: Voltage Regulator help

Can't answer your stator question, but how is the regulator mounted? Should be on some part of the metal framing, and coated on the back with heat sink. This transfers the heat generated onto to metal.

Your stator is shot, you're misunderstanding the voltages, you should have between 18 and 22 vac not 180-220vac. 60 vac is way way way too high.. We used to run these without regulators... 60VAC would have cooked a battery.

Disconnect the regulator and test the yellow wires on the stator side. Red probe on the yellow wire, black probe on ground, meter set for A/C voltage.
