Hi All,

1990 V6 135 HP 2-stroke mercury ob

I may be having an issue with the regulator on my engine overcharging my battery. I will be conducting tests over the next few days using my multimeter and the instructions in the OEM service manual.

My question is out of curiosity:

In the assembly diagram, there is the "regulator assembly" and the 'voltage regulator'.

The voltage regulator sits on top of the engine block while the assembly is mounted on the side behind the trim solenoids and ignition coil assemblies.

What is a regulator assembly versus the voltage regulator? I know the voltage regulator is suppose to..well..regulate how much voltage is sent to the battery during charging; I don't know what this regulator assemly is or how it fits into the larger picture of the electrical system; or if I should be testing this thing as well. I do have questionable performance out of my trim solenoids so I wonder if this thing has something to do with it...or is it just a mounting point?

Thanks for your input.

Re: Voltage regulator versus regulator assembly

From what i understand...and its not much.. I can tell you that the voltage regulator is a device that takes the high output of the engine generated electricity and drops it to the correct voltage/ampergae to charge and do other stuff with.

As far as outboards go I'm not entirely familiar with how they work. But in my I/O, the regulator crapped out and i got an alternator with a built in regulator and rigged up a belt to save some money and still get what i needed from the engine.

hope this help a little

Re: Voltage regulator versus regulator assembly

There are either one or two (identical) voltage regulators on a two stroke motor such as yours. There should be no other regulator type parts/assemblies on the charging system.

What you call a "regulator assembly" is either one of two (identical) voltage regulators or you have the part described incorrectly. If you provide the serial number of your motor and the part number of the "regulator assembly" part you are asking about, I am sure someone (like myself) can provide you more information on this part.

You can look up the part number on the Mercury Express Parts website:

Re: Voltage regulator versus regulator assembly

There's 4 or 5 possible scenarios for that engine.

1. Rectifier near the switchboxes, with a small shunt voltage regulator on top of the engine. (16 amp)

2. #1 with the voltage regulator discarded. (burns out and is generally useless)

3. Voltage regulator with about 5 wires coming out of a 2" x 2" box. Could be mounted anywhere. (16 amp converted to regulator.)

4. Dual #3 (40 amp dual coil)

5. Single big water cooled regulator mounted on the back of the engine, with one heavy pair of yellow wires going to it from the stator, usually through a terminal strip. (40 amp water cooled)

They are convertible every whichaway, so pictures would help.

hope it helps

Ok, since we are going down this path:

Per j_martin options, I am pretty sure my engine is #1, the 16amp.

The assembly diagram I was referring to is from mercury parts express and the 'regulator assembly' I am referring to is part# 18736A21 while the 'voltage regulator' i am referring to is part# 88825A 7. I was using the 'description' as defined in the mercury parts express website as names for these parts.

Single rectifier mounted above the switchboxes, single regulator mounted on top rear of block, 16 amp system.

Just dump the existing rectifier and regulator and install the CDI kit # 194-8825K1 and all problems will go away...
