1972 65 Hspr. Electric shift. Need a method to check voltage from battery to solonoid to ignition switch. Have a voltage meter. One wire goes from one of the small bolts to the ignition. The other small bolt on the side goes the electic shift. Is the solonoid grounded by the strap holding it to the motor. Do I put the voltage meter on the ignition switch to get a reading. Should there be a reading if It is attached to the post on the side of the solonoid. Will any reading need to be checked coming off the electric shift. Problem is that the solnoid has been replaced, and starter is not turning over.

Re: Voltage

Hold up Skip...Hold up here buddy....

You should NOT have anything on the solenoid going to the electric shift wires going to the going to the gear case. On the solenoid, you have the hot coming from the ignition sw. and probably through a start in neutral sw (they call it a safety switch on the starboard side)to the solenoid. The other side of the solenoid goes to ground. We're talking the small posts on the solenoid here.

If I'm off in left field Skip...let me know.

Is your control box an Evinrude push button type or just a single lever Johnson control box.
