Volvlo 3.0 GS w/ SX outdrive 2002 Loud Noise from Outdrive

Hello all...It's been awahile since I posted last, but I always get great info. so here we go. Took boat out for first time this summer today. Before I left home, ran engine on earmuffs, temp. was good engine idled great. Dropped boat in lake, took off away from dock, open to WOT and about 2 minutes smelled smoke. I turned engine off, but looked at temp. first, 170 Degrees. Open engine compartment, smoke poured out. I could not find any damage, but smoke was coming from around engine shaft going through transom. Started boat again, engine sounded good but something was grinding. If I turned steering wheel even a bit in neutral, grinding got worse. Any suggetions? I would like for my boat not to be a yard ornament this year!

sounds like the coupler smoked.<br /> when was the last time the drive was off for service, gimbal bearing check and alighment check ?

gimbal replaced 2003, last I know that drive was off...engine makes loud noise when turned and running...I felt most vibration just below exhaust bellow on pipe. I though it might be gimbal again, but the first time gimbal went out, only shook during turns. This noise is definately metal on metal.There are no signs of any engine damage. The smell was like burning bellow, but it was ok.

The coupler is the part that connects the engine to the input shaft of the drive. It has splines mounted in rubber. If the rubber lets go it will smoke and make noise.

How do I replace this? I'm sure that I will have to remove outdrive. Is there a particular part number for this coupler (different name?)I'm currently getting manual to aid in repair.

The Volvo part number for the coupler is 3854032 and it's called a "Rubber Coupling" in the parts manual.<br />It's bolted on the end of the crankshaft, so you have to pull the drive and the engine to get to it.<br />The couplers don't go bad on a 3.0L engine very often. I would sure look at engine alignment when you put the new coupler in to make sure it's on the money, or you will be doing the job again very soon.

Thanks for all of the info. Don. I just looked this part up, 350.00 bucks. Could there be anything else that might be a possibility?

Time to stop asking and start looking. Get a mirror and a flashlight and look at the back of the coupler.
