Volvo 255B question

I’m hoping somebody can help me. Here is my boat. It is a 21.5 foot 1978 Caribbean (I think they went out of business in the mid 1980’s, but I’m not sure, any information on the company would be appreciated) I/O powered by a Volvo Penta 255B. I realize that because of the age it may be difficult to repair and maintain, but it is the boat I grew up with and was handed down to me, so I would like to try and keep it if the costs don’t get to high. The boat has always been well maintained, but when I moved to Indiana from California 4 years ago I had to put it in storage and it has not been used. Unfortunately the person that did all the work on the boat and knew the most about it, is no longer with us.

First question. The markings on the valve covers are Volvo 255B, and some of the other parts are marked Volvo. However, the intake manifold says GM. Is this a Volvo motor or a Chevrolet? Does anyone know anything about the 255B? I always thought it was a Chevrolet 350, but apparently I’m wrong. I’ve seen a few manuals advertised on the internet, does anyone have any recommendations.

Second question. Like I said it’s been in storage and hasn’t been used for 4 years. I tried to turn the engine over the other day and it’s froze up. I did a search on the site and have tried most of the suggestions (Marvel Mystery Oil, break fluid, transmission fluid). This weekend I am going to try some diesel fuel. If there are any more ideas I’m willing to try. I realize that even if I get it unstuck, the chances of the engine being okay are very slim. I was considering swapping the engine for a Chevy 350 I built for my 55 Nomad. Unfortunately the restoration is going to have to be put on hold for some time (“oh honey, it doesn’t cost that much to raise kids” yeah, right!), and then when I do it I am going to put a 255 back in it. Anyway, the 350 is just sitting here, it has less than 5000 miles on it. The engine was bored .30 over and has drop forged pistons. The heads were ported and polished and it’s got a Carter 750 on an Edelbrock intake manifold. The cam is an RV (recreational vehicle) cam, I don’t remember the angles. Anyway it has plenty of power to smoke the tires on that lead sled. However, I was reading some posts on this sight about swapping a marine engine with a car engine and I’m not sure if it will work. Apparently the cam angles are different. Does anybody have any ideas if this would work because the engine is more high performance than a standard car engine? Would I be better of 1)junking the boat and saving for another one (many years down the road), 2) rebuilding the Volvo 255B or 3) drop in the Chevy 350? I’m okay with a wrench when it comes to cars, but I don’t really know anything about boats. I would really like to try and learn, so any information you guys can give me would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Volvo 255B question

Hi ski55,

As far as I know, caribbean are alive and well. Here is their home page link.

Caribbean Boats

The AQ255B is a 307GM and the type of outdrive is probable 270 or 280 (common for that era).
Volvo doesn't (and never did) make their own v8, they used GM or Ford back then.

I'm interested in your model because my boat was built in 1978 and I heard rumors that it is a copy of the 22ft Caribbean Reefrunner, any chance of a picture? My boat is a 22ft Johnstone Reefrunna.

Aldo

ski55,

I've just realized I've given you an Aussie link, maybe they have gone belly up in the U.S.

I couldn't find any other site outside of Australia. They are certainly alive and well here and have an excellent reputation. Sorry.

Aldo

Re: Volvo 255B question

Thanks for the information. I looked at my boat and you were correct, it has a 280 outdrive. I checked the engine ID numbers at mortec.com and it appears to be a Chevy 350. At least now I have a place I can start. I ordered a Clymer Marine Maintenace manual from Overtons.com, I'm hoping it can help me. How do I seperate the motor from the outdrive? I found some exploded pictures on the internet of the outdrive assembly, and it looks like there is a drive shaft that fits into the flywheel (as opposed to the flywheel bolting to a torque converter, etc.). Does the engine need to be slid forward? I'm hoping the manual can help me out, but if anybody has any knowledge in this area I would gladly listen. I'm still looking around for some pictures, if I can't find anything I'll have to take some new ones.

Re: Volvo 255B question

The volvo 280 is easy to disconnect and remove the gimbal ring and uni shaft. The clymer manual has good diagrams & instuctions to guide you.

Depending on what type of bell housing you have (not sure on a 26 year old) the engine and housing should come out as one and then seperate out of boat, the drive shaft you refer to will be inside the bell housing (also called gimbal housing). Lift engine slightly and pull forward to clear transom and then lift out. Any pics of your boat yet (please)???

Aldo
