Hi,
I am soon to be a new 'old boat' owner. The Cobra boat I am buying is fitted with the Penta Z drive and comes without engine. The Z-drive appears to be locked in the 'down' position. Is there any simple way of raising the Z-drive to allow for trailor transportation.
Thanks

Hi arty

You can just raise it by hand and tie it with something. The drive is lifted mechanical by a rod that presses down on a lever in the left side seen from the rear of boat.

Volvo marketed a kind of "Transom Saver Bracket" to secure the drive during transport but i dont think they are available any more. Put something below or tie it upwards. If Drive is stuck, something is corroded. It weighs 50 Kgs so there is some resistance lifting.

I owned a boat with this setup for some years. I volvo carengine fits the drive if it has been with 130 or 145 HP motor. Otherwise its a 5.7 l GM.

Thanks G Dane,

It sounds as though there is some corrosion involved. I may have to think again.

arty.p

The corrosion is between the nylon bushings and the housing, causing the bushings to squeese the stainless bolts. Usually no problem. The alloy theese drives are made from is one of the best worldwide. If the drive functions, corrosion is often a minor problem. Is there much visible corrosion ?

Hi Arty

I have to apology. I see now you descriped it as a 270T. I had the 270 model which is only tilt. The 270T is a trim model as far as i remember. I am not sure you can lift it by hand. If Volvo drives have corrosion it is very rarely a serious problem, besides to cleaning/replacing bushings.

The drive is VERY strong. I ran my boat > 75 hrs every year 6 years, and the boat was from 1976 !!

I talked to many people, but never met any having serious problems with volvo drives. There was a topic some time ago here on Iboats, and a couple of the experienced people gave the same opinion.

Be sure you change both anodes at use in saltwater.

If you need any info - email me salg@romantiskbad.dk

Dane

If your outdrive has hydraulic trim cylinders with cast aluminum covers over the trim cylinders inside the boat it will be necessary to get inside the boat and loosen the hydraulic hoses at the pump. Then outside the boat lift whole outdrive and unlatch reverse lock. You will be able to pull up outdrive assembly enough to trailer. Caution! You must tie something around the prop and hook it to rear cleats of boat. This will hold your outdrive up. If you have any other questions you can call me at
1-800-949-2189

After I posted my reply to you I realized you did not live in the United States so I am adding my e-mail address so you can contact me that way if you have further questions. My e-mail is
jmontgom@gulftel.com or my phone number is
(251)962-2189. Don't think the 800 number will work from GB
