Just purchased a 1980 wellcraft 255 with volvo AQ260 (chevy 350) and 280 outdrive. When running motor in yard hooked to garden hose, it is very hard to shift the outdrive out of forward gear. Shifts into forward just fine. My repair manual does not show any procedure for adjusting the shift cable. Can anybody tell me how or give advice as to what is causing this ? Thanks

Re: Volvo 280 shift adjustment

Remove the rear cover from the outdrive. Disconnect the shift cable behind the cover. After this take the shift cable loose. Manually shift lever down for forward and up for reverse or vice versa. Turn your prop after this to see if you have forward and reverse. Volvo has a cone clutch mechanism inside. It shifts entirely in the upper gearhead. I believe your problem might be a bad shift cable or shift control mechanism inside the boat. If this does not correct your problem you can call me at<br />1-800-949-2189
