My tilt motor go's down but it won't lift up my
:p outdrive! I bypassed the up/down relays, buy applying power directly to the motor. Same problem, I removed the motor, applied power...and the motor turns both directions.is there a worm gear inside that maybe the problem.

Thanks Dave

Re: volvo 280 tilt/trim problem!

Hi Dave, sounds like you are describing the electric/mechanical tilt (not hydraulic). Even new, they are underpowered.

I had the same problem and discovered 2 causes.

1. The outdrive pivots were very tight and needed rebushing ( difficult to lift by hand)

2. The electric motor sounded like a coffee grinder and wouldn't lift unless I had someone manually helping, although on the bench it worked fine (like yours).

New motors are difficult to find but not impossible, I went with a larger motor and made an adaption plate to suit - also rewired with heavier wiring and relays. I also fitted a curcuit breaker for extra protection.

The bearing housing that the motor bolts into does have a worm gear setup. If its going down then it is not siezed so I don't think that is your problem.

Aldo

Re: volvo 280 tilt/trim problem!

Found my tilt motor on e-bay. Brand new. It took a couple of weeks because mine is a rare one but the popular ones are on there all the time. I paid $37.00 it listed for $230.00. Just get the #’s off the side of the motor and do a search for them. A way to check the worm gear is to take off the tilt motor and stick a wide screwdriver into the hole and see if it turns freely if so it the motor. I also took apart a tilt motor cleaned everything, put it back together, and bench tested it. Worked great. When installed it wouldn't pick up the drive and started to smoke. At that point I knew I just was wasting my time and started looking for a new one.

Re: volvo 280 tilt/trim problem!

Hi guys,
I had a heap of gremlins in my 280 tilt system when I fist got my boat last yar.

Motor was fine, the problems were are in the electrical control circit.

I removed all the switch gear from the plastic housing on top of the tilt tube and relocated it all in a plastic IP 65 box which I screwed onto the inner transom.

Check the limit switch that is in the top of the tilt housing, On mine if the 2 screws for the cover on that housing are too tight then the leg will go down but not come up......

They only need to be nipped to hold that plastic housing in place on the top of the tube.

Check the wiring circuits carefully as fingers may have mucked up the wiring connections in a previous repair.

Mine works perfectly now but if your electric motor runs and the leg won't lift then you need to adjust the preload on the spring that tensions the cone clutch inside the gearbox. If the bearings each side of the brass worm gear have had water in there you will hear grinding noises when the motor is operating.

Refer to SeLoC's manual for information on that adjustment.

Good luck

Peter

The new style motor can be adapted to work with the old style motor. The new is a 2 wire and the old is a 4 wire. You MUST rewire your relays. One of the relays is completely different and must be changed out.

I did mine a couple of years ago. Was a challenge to redo but worth it. Saved big money, plus if it goes out again I know to buy the 2 wire motor which is cheaper. It does bolts right up like the old motor. I will try to find the P/N and post it later on.
