Hello all, My dad and i are getting the boat done and are about to take the outdrive apart. the unit looks to be in pretty good condition but we are going to take it all apart and make sure its good. What should we check and replace. Should we replace all seal and o rings or only if they are bad. I guess we would like to know what to expect and check and replace. Thanks

You could start by draining the fluid and doing a pressure test on the outdrive to see if you notice any leaks. If you don't find any leaks, pulling the upper gear box off and inspecting the ujoints and drive shaft bearing/s would be a good idea.

Here's a thread about pressure testing the outdrive.

Resealing the entire outdrive is an option but may not be necessary. Unless you're boating in salt water...

Let us know what you find.:)

You have one of the classically styled Sea Ray hulls--a quality boat. They don't make'em like that anymore with fiberglass twice as thick as other brands.

If your hull is in good condition and your Volvo unit ever wears out, this great hull would warrant installing a new generation Mercruiser unit in it.

Good luck on your project. That must have been one of the original DuoProps.

Re: pressure test, if you have a leak, yes it will most likely be an oring or seal of some sort. Some are easier to replace than others.

If your hull is in good condition and your Volvo unit ever wears out, this great hull would warrant installing a new generation Mercruiser unit in it.

This would require a new transom and a lot of fibergalss work as the hole for the Merc. would be smaller than the current cutout. The old VP DP outdrives are better than any of the outdrives Merc has put out. However maintenance and proper upkeep have a lot to do with the longevity.

I would sure never downgrade my boat by putting a Mercruiser in it. IF it ever wears out a newer Volvo would be the way to go. Mercruisers are the Chevies of the boating world, Volvo is the Cadillac.

That must have been one of the original DuoProps.
Far from it, There was the 280 DP, the 290DP, then his is the redesigned housing (same basic internals).

You really don't want to do that. First of all, it's not necessary, second without some special tools, you aren't going to get it all apart without damaging something. Do the pressure check like Captmello suggested to find the leaks.
Here is the OEM manual for your outdrive. http://www.4shared.com/file/48536730/fa3b3311/280_to_DP-C_Drive_manual.html
If you post your engines full model number or Serial number, I can get you the engine manual also.

One thing I would do before putting it in the water is replace that ujoint bellows. Very easy job, but very difficult job if water gets in it and into the primary shaft bearings in the flywheel cover. That requires an engine pull to fix.

Thanks for the manual Don, we believe the engine and outdrive were replaced around 89 and that the outdrive is a 290 DP-A what do you think. The numbers on the outdrive are 854021 1,95 DP-A 3102099292. I have also taken a video an uploaded to youtube so you all can get a better look at things. The engine sn is 4100121893. So Don, if it holds a vacuum and pressure then you don't think any other maintenance is neccessary besides replacing bellows and checking u joint, and bearings?

Cool Boat. Ya, thats a very good outdrive and looks in good shape.

I see you're looking for Dons opinion, but I thought I'd mention, this is the way to go for a new distributor.

http://www.marine-ignition.com/imdist8v.htm

This is one of the best deals I've seen. Total new ignition for under $200.

Good luck.

Aw awesome thats well within our price range, thanks, so i take it you think that one was shot? I see that it says for any marine or automotive v8 what about the advance ? i thought it was different for marine or does it not matter because it's electronic. I don't really know how they work. And sorry i am looking for anyones advice. What do you think about that last part :

if it holds a vacuum and pressure then you don't think any other maintenance is neccessary besides replacing bellows and checking u joint, and bearings?
