Hello to you all

This is my first time on the forum, and wonder if any of you guys could offer assistance?
I have a couple of volvo 3.0glp-d engines fitted to my princess new in 2006, as yet they have only covered 55hrs.
For the majority of those hours, I have had a problem with the engines stalling out when i try to engage either forward or aft drive.
This only materialises when i first use the boat, i.e when first leaving the marina, when the boat has had a bit of a run it seems fine.
I have tried engaging the drives whist the boat is still tied to the dock, but still find they will not engage and run, unless i give it a bit of gas which is hardly pratical in a packed marina!
I have tried putting additives in with the fuel, which is fresh, changed plugs, the origionals were extremely sooted up and cleaned the stone type filter to no avail.
The tickover seems a little low to me at 500rpm, and when i can get them to run in forward gear the tickover is about 300rpm?
I am lead to believe this should be nearer 750rpm?
If this is the case, is it a simple adjustment of the tickover setup?
I would be extremely grateful if anyone could offer some advice as it is driving me mad!

Many thanks

Danny

Those are carbed engines, not EFI.
If you are trying to take off with cold engines, no wonder they die.
I would bet when they warm up for 5 to 10 minutes and the choke is open, they idle at the proper range of 650 to 750 rpm.

Ayuh,... That, along with the low idle tells Me your Carb needs Attention...
Atleast some Adjustments,... Maybe even internal settings...

Letting it warm up at a hi-idle helps,+ getting the idle up to spec will help...

Re: Volvo 3.0 GLP-D Stalling problem

Thanks for the speedy replies fellas!
I always let the engines warm by leaving them in gear untill the temp gauge reads normal, but even on normal temperature range i find they still cut out if i just put them in gear.
I can normally keep them going if i gas the throttle a bit, but it makes trying to get out of the marina tricky!
I am also finding that if i pump the throttle quickly, the revs take a moment to catch up?? As if fuel starvation?
I know my rpms seem well down and im going to try and adjust them up to within spec, but is this done on the idle adjustment screw with the engine in forward gear, and would anyone know what the tickover should be with no load?
The engines admittedly havent done much work, but i have always maintained fresh fuel and kept filters changed, I find it hard to think that the carbs need work after 55hrs?
I really appreciate your assistance

Cheers

That would be normal with such a slow idle, the engine is loading up with excess fuel.

What seems odd to me is why 2 engines are idleing so slow.
I would adjust the idle to proper rpm to start with, then check timing (using the proper shunt) and then readjusting the idle mixture and speed to get all to specs.
I wouldn't let the idle over 750 rpm in neutral, or you will probaby have a dieseling problem, and you don't want that either.
I shoot for 700 to 725 max in neutral, with a good running engine, it will drop down to about 650 in gear, and not stall.

Do you have a Volvo serial number for one of your engines? I would like to check some service bulletins, and the SN helps me find them easier.

Re: Volvo 3.0 GLP-D Stalling problem

Thanks for the reply Don,

I find it strange that it affects both engines, my only guess is that the guy who installed them mucked about a bit with the idle screws before?
I have one question regarding water in the fuel, would it affect the engines in this way?
The only reason i ask is that the problem affects both engines?
But on saying that, once the boat has been out on a run, they go into gear fine?
I am going to the boat later in the week, i will get the serial numbers.
I am going to def try and get the idle within spec so that i can go from there.
Thanks very much for your assistance
