I have a Volvo 140hp 3.0GS with the SX drive. Recently the engine starts up fine, runs for about 15min and stops. I did an ignition tuneup which didn't fix the problem. I also changed the fuel filter, same results. I'm thinking when the coil starts to get hot and cuts out. Anyone have similiar issues, should I just change the coil out? Could be the coil breaking down, could be the ignition module (depending on ignition). What is the model number of your engine. It's a number like 3.0GSXXXX. The model number letters where the X's are.

Thanks for your reply, I can't get to the boat until August 6th. Its 2 hours away. Would the m/n be on the legend plate on top of the engine? Is there any other place to get the m/n? <br />Thanks again!

What year is the boat, that may be close enough.

Don, the boat is a 1996, carburated not fuel injected. I have a hunch it doesn't have the ignition module.<br />Thanks for your help

Not sure what I was thinking about, all Volvo 3.0L engines used the EST distributor with a module.<br />But I would think there is more of a chance of a bad coil or coil connection causing the problem than the ignition module. Usually when the module goes, it goes completely, not on and off.

I'm going to change out the coil. Your help has been greatly appreciated. Will let you know how it turns out.

Changed out the coil, still experiencing the same symtoms. Is there any way to check the ignition module? Engine runs fine for about 15minutes then just stops. No sputtering or coughing, just turns off. Any suggestions were to go from here would be appreciated.<br />Thx

You sure its getting fuel?? Sounds like the symptoms from a clogged fuel vent line.

Was just talking to a buddy last night. I changed the filter at the bottom of the fuel pump, but have not changed the filter entering the carb. I'm going to try that and see what happens.<br />Thx

What you need to do to isolate the problem, is when the engine stops, right then check to see if there is spark.<br />Also pull the flame arrestor and see if you have fuel squirting out the acelerator pump when you pump the throttle.

Hmmm... just a thought... I had a similar problem and found out that the wire that goes from the pickup coil to the ignition coil was bad. The one that has a resistor in it. The connection between the wire and the resistor died after warming up - so there was no fire. Easy to check with a DVM. Just as i said - it's just a thought.
