I have a volvo 4.3 glg with a SX-A drive. At the start of the season i had a dead battery and chalked it up to it being 5yrs old and just replaced it. We used the boat several times over the last month no problems at all. This week i picked the boat up and it had a dead battery again. I hooked up the jumper box and found the fuel pump was running without the key in. I have replaced the fuel pump relay and the problem is still there. I have found several posts with fuel pumps not working but none with a contentiously running pump. I understand that the pump starts with the key and then continues from a diode from the alternator is it possible the alternator is sending a signal to the pump even tho the boat ignition is off. Any ideas would help.

Remove the fuel pump relay and see if the pump continues to run.

Below is the wiring diagram. The orange wire going to the relay is what turns on the relay.

Disconnect the alternator connector (the one with the green and the purple wires in it) and see if the relay turns off.

Re: volvo 4.3 fuel pump always on, killing batt.

I found that the fuel pump would never turn off and thus killing the batt. After looking through several new and old posts i also started this thread and thought i had the problem figured out but not so much. If i pulled the relay the pump turned off, if i unplugged the alt it turned off, thinking the alt was to blame for always calling for the pump to be on, I bought a new one... Now the boat starts and runs for 20-30 sec and runs out of fuel. If i jump the connection at the alt. the pump runs and the thing stays running. I also would like to know where the diode is located. Is it possible that the diode would let power from the switch and not from the alt. thus killing the pump... I know I?m getting to a point of needing to take it somewhere but $$$issues prevent me. Not many Volvo mech. around here.

Also I need to say this cuz I?m very frustrated with the quality of Volvo?s GL-G and SX-A set up. This boat has had failure after failure and just about every time I look on this site there is already someone else with the same deal happening. I had 22 call tickets on this boat and it?s only a ?07? ranging from carbs to that 12vt trim pump. I have had 2 motors and two drives. The list goes on. I did however contact a attorney on call ticket 17 which Volvo settled with me for $2000 and a ext. of the factory warranty, and that ext. has come and gone.. And as you can tell the boat continues to break down. I will NEVER own a Volvo again. I hope others are not having repeated issues with there?s like me but It?s pretty evident that Volvo has wide scale problems with there product.

You need to have the alternator checked out by an alternator specialist (not an auto parts store). The fact that when you jump the alt. connector and the pump runs tells me your diode is working. But the fact that the power is getting to the green wire when the engine is not running means there is a problem with the alternator. Be sure to tell them that you have power to the green wire when the engine is not running.
