Ok Ill start with some background
Last summer one of the flap valves in the exhaust bellow fell apart and water ended up in the engine. Stupidly I attempted to start it many times but it would never even turn. When I had realized what happened I pulled the plugs and got all the water out. Oil was changed, new plugs put in, exhaust flap fixed. Put about 15 hours on the boat after that with zero issues or hint of problem. Also did compression test and had great compression on all cyclinders

Fast forward to this weekend. Did some maintenance. Put a new cap and rotor in (was badly needed I saw). New thermostat in which is working great also (old one was stuck open). Changed oil and lower end oil (changed every spring). Also put a new prop on it.

Went out for a spin to see how it was running etc. Engine was at proper temperature and oil pressure was great. Got the boat on plane and running full throttle and went to trim it out. As soon as I hit the trim the engine bogged down a few hundred rpm or so, engine trimmed up and then rpm returned. When I went to trim back down the same thing.

I stopped the boat and ran trim up and down a few times no issues what so ever no bogging nothing. Got the boat back on plane and did this a few times and it bogged every time then as soon as I stopped trimming it it came back. As a note voltage seemed to drop on the gauge a bit more then I had recalled but I could be wrong on that.

Then after about 30 minutes I heard a weird ticking noise audible at about 1500-2000 rpm and got louder as it went up. I couldnt pin point where it was coming from. Now the odd part, I trimmed up and down a few times no bogging nothing.

Took the boat out for the day as it was getting dark.

Could it be the alternator? What do I need to look at, part of me thinks maybe its valvetrain related, like a lifter or rocker or something maybe as a result of the water in the block issue the previous sumer.

Thanks for any insight. My idea is to get out there this coming weekend and see if the noise is still there and then maybe unhook the alternator belt and see if it goes away or not. I really should have put my DMM on the battery to see what I had but didnt think of it at the time.

Thank you

Bogging while trimming - most likely due to voltage drop from corrossion, start cleaning.

Ticking could be as simple as an exhaust shutter ratteling, but you need to determine where it is orriginating.
