Volvo 5.0 FL dying out

Okay guys. I am starting my own thread on this. I thought it may have been related to an RPM problem but my RPMs are normal now and my boat is shutting down, backfiring, and dying on me. I have done plugs, Cap, rotor, and water seperater/filter and verified the firing order. When its running, it goes great and is smooth. Every now and then when moving the throttle or at WOT, it will backfire and sometimes cut out and stall, sometimes just sputter and regain itself. I am thinking its electrical. It has the same symptoms when I pull the emergency kill switch, it backfires and comes to a halt. I looked under the throttle and there is a pink with purple stripe wire not connected to anything? There are some butt splices under there so its been messed with before I owned it. So if anyone has some ideas, let me know before I pay someone. The boat is a 95 Larson with the Ford 5.0 FL SX drive.

If its back firing have you checked the timing?

Fuel system is good shape and free of water? Did you check the old filters for junk and water?

I havent checked the timing. I dont have a light but have a friend who may be able to help me with that. The old filters looked good, when I bought the boat it had a 1/4 tank, I filled it with and added some dry gas, ran through a tank, refilled it and added sea foam. I thought I found something with my fuel vent being closed but I unscrewed it a bit and its still the same.

Buy a timing light. They are not expensive. In the mean time, take look at the base of the distributor housing where the clamp holds it. Are there any marks like the clamp use to cover a different area? If so the housing may have been moved. You should be at 10' BTC.

Re: Volvo 5.0 FL dying out

Okay so got the timing checked today. Good...Then we decided it must be electrical. Bought a coil and wires to finish off everything else that was new (plugs, Cap, Rotor).....So number 2 was loose, thats wierd....It broke so we had to pull it. Bottom of plug was destroyed....That wierd. Get the compression gauge, lets see how it is....And there is was. Zero compression in number 2.

So what now? My shop guys (car mechanics, not boat), said they can do a leakdown test and pull the valve cover off and see if they can see anything. Anyone have and input? Could it be a stuck valve? Broken Spring? There is no noises when engine runs. Its idles/Sounds really good. What do you think?

Anyone recommend a good place down the Cape to get it looked at?
