My fuel pump (pn 3855276) started intermittent whining the last few trips out. When it didn't whine immediately after starting, the motor ran great. When it did whine on startup, it would bog, surge, and occasionally stall. Last night it stalled and would not re-start. After that last stall the pump would not prime and make that light buzz sound when i turned the key to 'on.' Finally one last try at the dock (kicker brought me in), I heard the pump prime and the motor started right up.

Is the pump obviously dying, or could it be cleaned? Or could it be something else that I'm missing?

I would sure be checking for air leaks or plugs in the fuel system up to the engine before replacing the pump.
http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=283269 either air or plugged up something will cause the pumps to sound different.
Might also check the fuel pump relay for corrosion on the terminal ends.

I was having the same problem after running for a while the pump would whine and sometimes not idle. I found that the cooling lines were full of mud. I've blown them out with air and the whining has stopped so far...
