I am possibly going to purchase a four winns year 2000, 18ft. with volvo 4.3l v6 190h.p. with 170 hours on the engine appears well maintained. had new starter, and throttle cable jammed and was replaced but runs strong and sounds good going for another water ride any suggestions for what to look for, and what is a normal or acceptable amount of hours considering the engine had normal care and use? Also are the volvo engines reliable there seems to be quite a few newer boats using volvo engines?

Thanks!

Hi rick. I used to have a boat with a Volvo diesel and it was a great engine, very reliable. However, something to think about. They require a lot of special tools to work on,$$$. Finding mechanics who know how to work on them is difficult and $$$$. The Swedish use alot of unique parts that you can only get through Volvo, $$$$$. If it's a Volvo outdrive too, they are quite complicated in my opinion. With that said, it's good technology and will give you years of trouble free service, but even preventative maintenance is pricey. 170 hours is nothing as long as it was cared for properly. Good luck, that sounds like a nice boat. :)

Rick, I do sales for Iboats and know the products decently well. We have quite a bit of different engine parts for the boat as well as the manual for it. The parts we carry are manufactured by Sierra (after market) so comparitively speaking are extremely reasonably priced. I don't know much about the tools for it or if you do mechanical work at all but I've heard really good things about volvo penta.

I have that boat. Anyway the engine is all GM. Nothing special there, I think most people consider the VP drive a step above a Merc.

I have a '02 21 Larson BR. The engine is GM based 5L, outdrive is VolvoPenta. Nothing mysterious about it. Larson and Four Winns are the same company now I believe. My boat has not had any problems to this point. Love it.

Re: volvo 6 cyl. 190h.p. hours

Thanks for the reply I feel the boat that I had questions about the volvo engine. seems like a runner we'll see, but I am interested in buying a shop manual or what ever is the best literature pertaining to the volvo 4.3 eng. yr 2000.The only item I need to address right away is the teperature gauge does not work, but over heat horn works and I ran the boat in the water under load conditions and under idle conditions etc. water seem to move through the cooling system fine and plenty of power when operating the boat for about 30 minutes at various speeds and at the dock for a considerable amount of time seems to be an indication problem, a shop manual would be nice.

Thanks again for the help!
