Hi guys, I have an AQAD41A and I am losing anti freeze, but I did not see it in the oil when I drained it for winterization. I looked around the whole motor while it was running and didnt see any obvious leaks. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Two places the 41's were noted for leaking is the head gasket (Streaks down the stbd side of the engine) and the gasket between the turbo and the exhaust manifold.
How fast are you loosing it?

if it isnt a hose you wont see an antifreeze leak on that engine unless you are underway. the head gasket leak is usally more evident on the side hardest to see, the heat exchanger side. the turbo gasket leak sticks out like the dogs proverbials as crystals at the turbo mount. another place thats common is the coolant cap. if none of these check out it could be something like the bus heater hoses on the back of the heater.

Re: Volvo Anti Freeze Leak, Where is it going?

Thanks for the help guys. I don't know exactly how fast I've been losing it. At the end of last season is when I noticed the problem. Before each start up I would check the coolant level and have to add about 1/4 to 1/2 gallon.

My boat is actually at the mechanic's now having the motor swung because I have to have the the trim cylinders replaced. I was just wondering if there was anything I can check/look at while the motor is out to try and find this leak. Thanks guys

I've found a few leaks on the head gaskets that can't be seen with the engine in the boat. Physically impossible to get mirrors and flashlights to see. By using a digital camara. But with the engine out, just look up under everything to the joint between the head and the block. You will see the streaks.

Thanks guys, I'm gonna take all your info and go over that motor and hopefully find that leak. While we're on leaks....do you guys know where a minor oil leak might most likely be coming from on the AQAD41A? at the end of last season, I noticed oil in the bilge. It was constantly present, but the leak wasn't enough to lower level on the dip stick. I looked all over for that leak to no avail as well. It's not blow by because I have a catch can for that.

Thanks again

never had to pull that style of engine to change the trim rams. why'd the engine get pulled?

You do if the pins are frozen in the transom shield. In salt water boats I have had to pull the transom shield in order to use a slide hammer and heat to remove the pins. My previous boat was one of them.

I have the same issue. Just got done putting the engine in after replacing oil pan (rust) and working corrosion control. I had not used the boat enough times to notice losing coolant but did have to add a couple of times. Repainted the entire engine and have put a couple of hurdred miles on her. Each time having to add approx 1/2 gallon of water to the closed system.

I did notice faint streaking on the starboard side of engine below the heat exchanger. What would be an acceptable estimate to have the head gasket replaced? Ball park is fine.

Thanks
