I have recently purchased a 1986 Bayliner with a Volvo Penta AQ131A 2.3L Motor with a Volvo 275 Outdrive and im have a strange problem with the motor.
I've put the boat on the water twice since i've owned it, and had a problem both times. Letme explain what happened yesterday.
Myself and two buddies of mine launched the boat. We Cruised on and off for about 5 hours. Did alittle exploring and fishing.
I'd say we'd run it for about 45 minutes around 3-4k rpm, Idle for 10 minutes and sit/shut off for 20 minutes. We repeated this process about 3 or 4 times.
After the 4th time, while we were cruising around 3.5k rpm, the boat engine randomly started to throttle back on its own, as if it was suffocating. It was slowly throttle all the way back and stall out over the course of 15minutes. (while in drive).
Then, with the motor stalled out. While attempting to restart, It would sound like it would start to turn over, (hearing each individual cylinder fire, with a slight pause inbetween.), but it would not completely turn over.
We could not restart the motor for about 15-20 minutes, once we got it to finally start, it had to be idled high for about 4 minutes(as if the motor was cold), otherwise, if we let it try to normally idle, right after restart, it would stallout.
The entire way back in, the motor was struggling. It would slowly start to throttle back on its own the entire time, until it stalled out, and process had to be repeated. This happened 4-5 times before i got back into dock.
Funniest thing is, when we got it back to dock. It idled normally for 20-30 minutes while tied up to the dock and never stalled out.
Im looking for ideas and opinions about what is going on here. The engine temperature always holds around 175 degrees (normal for this motor). And then Oil pressure holds fine around 70-75 while driving.
I've recently replaced the fuel filter and fuel pump. (there was a seperate fuel issues before.
The boat has a rebuilt distributor (last year), and relatively new spark plugs and wires
Im new to boating, and i love being out on the water. Im just trying to get his hiccup outta the motor, because it obviously ruins my trips, lol. Im on a somewhat limited budget, so im trying to do as much work as i can w/o paying a boat mechanic
Any help that can be given will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
-Mike
