The # 4 cylinder has a steel ring just inside the exhaust port. Mine is rotted and I was able to pop it out cleanly. Where can I get a new one to put in and can I use a bit of JB weld or some other bond to place behind it to help keep it sealed so there is no leak between the block and the ring. Thanks Dennis.

Erosion at #4 exhaust port is common with these engines, best to take the head to a machine shop and have them repair. The ring you speak of is a previous repair.

was hoping to fix it without taking the head off. There is no corrosion around the block, just the ring. Came out clean. Any particular metal and thickness for this fix? Everything else on the cylinder is fine no cracks, etc. Just need to replace the ring without removing the head and taking it to a shop.

Agreed! It has been repaired before.
A good shop may be able to re-cut this, and custom make a new insert ring if the cylinder head exhaust port will allow for it.
If not, replace the head.

Re: Volvo aq131d cylinder block question

made the repair myself, used a piece of pipe cut to 1/4 inch, seated it in the hole where the old one came out and then used some jb weld steel putty mix and put it around the outer sides of the ring, let it cure for several days and it is perfect, reattached the exhaust and new gaskets, would never know it had been reparied, in fact it looks better than the previous repair.
