Volvo AQ131d Water mixed with Antifreeze in exhaust

Hello,
I recently purchased a 1989 Baretta Bowrider with a volvo aq131d 4 cyl. Boat starts and runs well (Ok, might need an exhaust manifold gasket, small leak), however the antifreeze in the heat exchanger leaks into the cold water cooling and flows out the exhaust then the engine obviously warms up. I ran a pressure test all cylinders were between 170 and 180. I just removed the heat exchanger, but don't really know what to look for to see if that is the issue? Would appreciate any advice!!!
Thank you,
Scott

Thanks! I dropped off the heat exchange at a radiator shop for a pressure test and ordered a new exhaust manifold gasket. If there is anything else that anyone can think of to check please let me know!!!!
Thanks,
Scott

Probably a hair line in the exchanger that will open up when hot.

Thanks again! Hopefully the pressure test will find it if that is the case. The heat exchanger is tough to come by used and extremely expensive new...

OK so, Heard from the radiator shop and they said that is did FAIL the pressure test. He is going to try and open it up to see if it is a gasket/o ring or something inside that is damaged.

Any advice at this point? Anyknow know what usually goes wrong with these things and/or where I could get a new/used one?!?!?!?!??!

Thanks,
Scott

Dunno but they may be able to repair it. I have had radiator shops repair some funky stuff for me in the past.

Re: Volvo AQ131d Water mixed with Antifreeze in exhaust

Hello All, Thanks for the advice....

Went back to the radiator shop and turns out the heat exchange is holding pressure fine. We took it apart and it looks OK, small dent in the cold water housing, probably from freezing over the winter, but all else is OK.

I spoke to a marina who services volvo's nearby and they said a common problem on these 4cyl volvo's is cylinder #4 on the head. They said it rots out and needs to be fixed by a machine shop. I need to take off the exh manifold tomorrow to see if I can see anything in there.

Has anyone heard of this before???? And know of a fix?!?

Took apart today.. Took off exh manifold and cyl head. number 4 cyl is corroded, just like everyone elses seems to be. I'm thinking somehow this is to blame. Visually the head gasket looks OK, I'll replace it while its apart. Needs a new impeller, I'll replace that too.

Has anyone repaired their cyl head on the number 4 cyl???? If so, how and who did it for you? I'm going to try some local auto shops to help out. Take a look at the pic attached....

Any help would be great!! Thanks,
Scott

OK So its all fixed. Here is what was needed:

The antifreeze leak was due to the insert in the heat exchange. There was a pinhole leak that the radiator shop didn't find. A friend fixed it for me with silver solder.

I had the head welded for about 400 bucks. It came out great and no more exhaust leak. Did a new head gasket, intake gasket, exhast gasket etc....

Took it out and it wouldn't accelerate past 3K in the water. Got a new distributor cap, points and a condenser and retimed the whole thing with a new timing belt and a timing light.

Runs great now!
