Volvo AQ170C cooling

Hopefully a quick and simple question, but I'm new to I/O engines. I have a 1975 Volvo AQ170C 6 cylinder engine. How does the cooling system on this engine work? I understand that it has two water pumps, a raw pump and a circulating pump, and a thermostat. How should this system act if its working properly? I'd like to know before I start it up for the first time. I have muffs for the water pickup. How long should it take for the engine to start spitting water out the exhaust? Do I need to prime the cooling system before I start it? any tips and warnings would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

Seth Petro

I f it hasn't been started or run in a long
while, pull impellar and change.
Normally you don't have to prime the water system.
when the system is air tight and impellar new
that motor runs cool.

Re: Volvo AQ170C cooling

Thanks, the engine already has a new impeller(replaced last year I was told). Hopefully, all will be good to go and I won't need to address anything. Does this engine have an actual thermostat? How warm does the engine have to get before it opens and I start getting water out the exhaust?

Thanks,

Seth

Yes there is a thermo
Water will come out exhaust quickly
Pee hole at top will flow when thermo opens
A year sitting is not good, impellar
might be stiff and malformed
thermo at top front of engine
under casting withh 2 tubes in front.

Re: Volvo AQ170C cooling

Thank calwldlif, for the information. I think I'll take my chance and hope that the impellar is good. I'm trying to keep the costs down on this rebuild for now. But thank you, this gives me some information to go on when I do fire the engine up. Whether or not I need to address cooling system issues or not.

Thanks again,

Seth Petro

Re: Volvo AQ170C cooling

Hai I want also ask a question about the cooling, when the motor is running the cooling is working but when we go faster the coolwater stops and when we make the coolwatertray ( I hope I say it good) open and close again than the coolwater comes back (sorry for my English, its not so good , i hope you understand) does anybody know what the problem is? We have a volvo penta AQ 170 / 280 from 1978 ( the impellor is good, one motor has this problem)
