I just had my engine rebuilt (bored, new pistons, rings and everything). I put the engine in the boat and the crankshaft would turn using wrench when timing belt and everything is hooked up. I put the motor in the boat hooked up the lower unit and tried to turn it over with the starter; I did not have the carbs hooked up yet. I had oil in the engine and little in each cylinder. The engine knocked twice I then stopped trying to turn it over with the starter. I pulled the plugs and tried to turn it with a wrench and it will not turn at all. This is a double overhead cam engine. I am going to pull the belt off tonight and see if I can move the engine with the timing belt off. Does anyone have any suggestions.

Do not try and turn the engine over without the timing belt in place. That is an interference fit engine and the valves will hit the tops of the pistons. Better to return it to the engine rebuilder, or could the problem be in your outdrive? Is it possible that it is locked up?

Have a great day

The person that bored the engine put in the pistons, and crankshaft back on the engine. I tore the engine down and took it to him. I put everything back on the block according to proper torch and back the way it went. I had lined up the timing belt and cams like I had done before. Everything was turning fine when using a wrench on the flywheel. I put the outdrive on and tried just turning it using the starter and it turned a few times with the knock and then stopped turning. I took off the outdrive and still will not turnover. Is it possible that it could be jammed on a valve?

Probably not a valve. If it was, it would have hit within the first 2 rotation of the crank. And you wouldn't have been able to get more than 720 degree's of rotation out of the engine. You can always try turning the engine the other way to see if it goes.

Well I pulled everything off of the engine but the head. I am still unable to turn the crankshaft by hand. It seems to be the main bearing and that was just put on by the mechanic the bored the engine and put in the new pistons.
