Volvo AQ171A Tappet ?

I was putting my engine back together tonight and instead of sticking that tappets in and greasing them in so they do not fall out as I put the head on I tried something different. I tried to just put the camshaft on after I put the tappets in. That was a horrible idea because I chipped the side of two tappets as I tried to slowly tighten down the cam shaft. How bad is a chip in the side of tappet? I do not feel like ordering 2 tappets and waiting for them and delaying getting out on the water for another couple of weeks. Will this be OK for the rest of summer or do I need to not do anything till I get those two replaced? Thanks for any help.

The tappets ( I assume your talking about the cam followers, english is not my first language usually wear and can be shimmed to take up the wear. However scratched or chipped tappets is a no no.

it's hard to tell exactly if you can use them for now without seeing them, but I would say you'll be ok if there is no chance of the tappets scratching the cam, the valve stem or the head. keep in mind that the heads are REALLY expensive on that engine, and it's getting harder to find used heads everyday, atleast where I live. I also take no responsibility for any sort of failure caused by you using your clearly broken parts.

Go ahead and run it, you should get an hour or so before you destroy the cam and everthing else in the engine from the debris, and it becomes mind boggling expensive to repair. But who cares, you got on the water in less than 2 weeks ........ for a little bit anyway.
