Hello again forum. I have an 83 Bayliner Explorer. It has a volvo 270 drive on it. It doesn't appear to be in the greatest shape. I came across a 280 from another boat (seems to be in great shape). Can I use the 280 on the boat?

The 280 has a serial number that I have been unsuccessful in researching.
PZNR 2820059C, any suggestions?

Re: Volvo compatability

A 280 has a different upper gear housing and probably has different power steering. The 270 has mechanical tilt. Would be quite involved to change over. call me and I will discuss it with you.

Re: Volvo compatability

The only thing that will be different between the 270 and 280 is the clamp ring on the upper gear box. Different mount screw for the helmet. Changing it is a lot easier said than done however. The clamp ring is interchangable between the 270 and 280 if in good shape. A job for a qualified tech to reshim the double bearing box, for proper backlash.
