Volvo DP noise and vibration

So last fall my outdrive started to vibrate and make a louder than normal noise when turning to the extreme right or left, so I thought maybe the gimball bearing was going out or needed to be greased. Well my mechanic tells me after pulling it apart that I have voids on the transom housing from a bad bearing and I need to replace it, he says $4500.00 in parts and in order to do this you need to pull the motor!

Wow, any thoughts???

Re: Volvo DP noise and vibration

Funny...(not really) because that just happened to me with my 1995 Wellcraft eclipse 210 5.0FL. We were at the lake yesterday and i turned the boat around to pick up the wakeboarder and it started vibrating really bad and before i knew it i heard a pop come from the back and i quickly brought it to neutral....the engine was still humming. I attempted to put it back into gear and nothing...reverse...nothing. Not sure what i am looking at. Hopefully someone will jump in and asssit us. Good luck.

Atcra --- I assume you had to be towed in. When the engine runs but you have no drive at the prop. I would first look at the "rubber coupling" drive coupler -- that takes the output of the engine and transfers it through a splined shaft to the outdrive. Over time/misalignment, the splines inseid the drive coupler can wear and fail causing the problem you have mentioned. If you drive back slowly -- perhaps you have spun the hub of a prop. When this happens it is almost like a transmission slipping. lots of rpm, but little forward movement.

Buttonaire -- your problem sounds very different. At the potential money that has been quoted, I would have someone else look at the boat. "voids in the transom" seem to be a different issue, and I am not sure how the mechanic diagnosed this without a lot of disassembly allready.
