i've got what sounds like a bearing growling. i have the oem manual for the outdrive, but i'm trying to figure out which outdrive i have. i feel pretty dumb, because i feel like it's staring me in the face.

I have the serial number, but haven't found any help there. (3102157647) It's a '94 5.7gi. from 'the pictures' in the manual, it looks like a 290, or a dp-(some letter)

the bearing i suspect is the gimble, and i've 'heard' of a model of dp that you can't replace the gimble w/o pulling the engine? i've been reading thread after thread and i see talk of a model that doesn't have a gimble?

probably of no help, but it started a growling noise that you could only hear while off-step. (900rpm) it would go away if you turned the drive to either side(left or right,) but going straight (up to about 15 degrees either direction) it growled. raising or lowering the drive some didn't seem to make any difference.

the same is still true while going slow, but it now is audible on step. when on step, if i trim up (to a good planing trim) and then trim down a very small amount, it goes away (at least it drops off sharply enough that it's not audible while on-step anymore.)

^^ all of that is in case it sounds familiar and i'm looking in the wrong direction. the primary goal here is to identify the drive! lol

Yup you gotta pull the engine, and those dont have a gimbal bearing, they have 2 ball bearings in the housing that connects the engine to the drive, and the shaft in there comes out the front to replace them.

It's a DP-C1.
Sounds like you have water in the bellows and the ujoints are bad.
You need to pull the upper gear box, and check the ujoints, and the bearing in the flywheel cover.

Have a look at this post. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=309095

Re: volvo dp - which one?

I will start there. this may be a dumb question - but once i get access to the U-joints, can i feel whether they're bad or not? (like slack or movement etc?)

On this model drive, is the gimbal bearing serviceable? I only ask because two fellow boaters have had gimbal grief in the last year and a half. one on king cobras and the other a volvo duo prop

thank you for your help! =)

Re: volvo dp - which one?

You don't have a gimbal bearing like OMC, Mercruiser, or the newer Volvo SX/DP-S drivcs.
You have a bearing in the flywheel cover that requires the engine being removed to replace it. Which is why it's so VERY IMPORTANT to keep good bellows on that style Volvo drives. They are easy to replace and should be replaced every couple of years to be safe. They aren't nearly as thick as other manufacurers bellow are.

Re: volvo dp - which one?

update:

With your help, i was able to replace the old bellows. It looked fine from the outside, but did indeed have a small tear (like size matters in this instance...) once i got to the inside. i got a new VP bellows and set of u-joints. i don't think the noise i had was coming from the u-joints =( but with the tear, and half of my boating in salt water, the u-joints were pretty rusty, and seems like now is a better time to replace them then after they degrade to the point where it's necessary.

i am going to start there, as well as have my props tuned, and if the noise persists, then i guess (correct me if i'm wrong,) the intermediate bearings are likely the cause of my growling. =(

i don't think i have the means to hoist the engine, so i will be getting a couple quotes. the place i bought my parts said they would go so far as to simply pull out the engine, let me do the bearings, and put the engine back in. that's far more helpful than i've found most marine places to be. he thinks 2 - 4 hours to get the engine out, sight unseen. (it's pretty easy, the whole engine cover comes out, and the engine is 2/3rds above deck. 22' cuddy...)

thank you again for your help! i more than recognize that you don't owe any of this advice to anyone!

=)
