i have a 1999 Volvo dps drive behind a 5.7gsi engine in a 1999 245 fourwinns sundowner. i have a knocking when at full turn at low, near ide, speeds. it also has a vibration sometimes feels like a bad bent prop, but it goes away when i go to neutral and back into gear. i think the knocking is a gimbal, does that sound right? also hoping the vibration is the gimbal also? the props are stainless f6's, they are not bent or chipped. if i have to replace the gimbal is it best to do u joints or are they long life usage.
the other issue that i have is when i go from in gear into neutral the drive feels like it is thumping trying to get out of gear, it thumps for about 5 seconds then stops, it only does that once in a while. i just bought the boat and it ran great for a few times out then this started happening. there is no holes in the bellows but its starting to crack. i had a shop service the drive and engine before i came home after i bought it, so i dont know if the fluid they used can cause the drive not to come out of gear fully.
how hard is it to pull these drives? i have the service manuals and am not afraid to do it just want to know what to expect. do i need any special tools, i have everything automotive. thanks for all the help
