Volvo DPS-M rolling torque..prop seals

I have replaced the prop shaft seals along with the prop seals in the bearing housings on my Volvo 2000 DPS-M 1.95 drives. I checked my initial rolling torque on both drives before I disassembled the units and they both measured out at 5-6 inch pounds. Everything felt very smooth, there was no endplay in the vertical shaft and the bearings looked great. The Volvo Penta workshop manual says to set final rolling torque at 18-26 inch pounds, I understand that is preloading new bearings. I talked to a Volvo Penta technician and he said to set the torque at the lower end of the 18-26 inch pound spec. I assembled the unit and set it to 18 inch pounds. Did I do the right thing or should I set it back at 5-6 inch pounds? Thanks!

The automotive drive gear bearings give specks for new bearings and another rolling torque for used bearings. The one for used bearings is always a lot lower than for new. They have to be readjusted each time because they don't use shims. However on the marine drives, if I'm only replacing seals I reinstall all the original shims.

Thanks for the response.. I only replaced the seals and no bearings/shims. It does make sense there would be different rolling torque specs for bearings already in use I just don't know what those specs would be. Here in Minnesota it is REALLY hard to find anyone that knows anything on these Volvo's even the "Volvo certified dealers". I think 18 inch pounds should be ok, but having a second opinion is always good.-Tim

I just looked up the specks for the pinion bearings of the diffs on my jeep. Just for comparison, the new bearing rotating torque is 20-40 in lbs, the used bearing spec is 10-20.

Thanks for the help..I am going to stick with 18 inch pounds final rolling torque. From what I can find online it looks to be accurate.
