Volvo drive oil

Neighbor has been using quicksilver hp drive oil in his outdrive for the last 3 years. Don't know the exact drive right now,but it's a duoprop. I know volvo recommends volvo oil only,but what could happen? Is their oil that much different?

I used the Merc Hi-Performance in my Volvo DP, never had a minutes problem. It meets the GL5 specs plus any water that does get in it mixes with the gear lube. The OEM stuff separates and you can end up with water in the lower gears, and gear lube in the upper.
My boat stayed in the water all summer in salt water. Except for the 6 week pull out and pressure wash.
