Curious, this motor uses a similiar HVS dist almost identical to merc. On a merc there is nothing inside but on volvo there is some type of electronics inside.
With the electronics unplugged the motor starts and runs normally, so what does this electronic gadget do or control. Thought maybe the tach but it works.
Story behind it is the motor dies and the comp was scanned and said dist problem. PO stripped a screw in the rotor and it fell out ,also broken was the inner mounting hole for the cap. Repair was replace the dist @ $1600 .Was going to drop in a merc dist but stopped when I saw the electronics and simply repaired what was broken with some 6-32 x 3/8 bolts for the rotor and some starboard for the broken mounting bolt. The mechanism inside the dist is similiar to a pickup but only has 1 notch about a 1/2 wide.
Anybody know ,dont have the eng serial number ,sorry

This was discussed by muc before, but from what I remember, the CPS does the main work of signaling the ECM to fire. The one in the distributer is used to fine tune the spark. It can run without it but there should be some kind of error show up

Agree, but could be worst, there is a guy in another current thread which has changed all kinds of things including the ECM, and pulled the harness apart trying to figure out why the motor won't start. Still no luck

Oh and will agree it is the cam sensor

if he has spark from the coil the Crank sensor is doing its job, motor will start and run without the cam sensor plugged in. Was the dist removed and installed wrong?

BT Doctur: I can really see what you mean about all the computer controlled gadgets they put on the new engines. On my sunken Cobalt, the engine was 2000.00$ and the electronics were over 3000.00$ easy and the labor was free. I really would not want to be out of sight of land with the new stuff. People will tell you that's what all the new cars have. But if the car dies, you can pull over to the side of the road and phone a wrecker. In the middle of a storm, or out in the ocean your life and others are on the line. I wish these engineers could experience those moments when either the engine runs or your done. Even when you take them to a dealer,a lot of the time they can't fix the problems either. Dave-R
