Volvo only turns 1/4 turn

Last fall I bought a boat that hadn't been in the water in three years. If it matters, it's an 85 Bayliner. It has the Volvo 125 motor, a 270 outdrive. When I bought it I grabbed the pulley and spun the motor to make sure it wasn't locked up, it was free. Since it had been winterized (for three years) and winter was coming on in Colorado, we didn't do anything with it, stuck it in storage for the winter. Now it's time to get it ready for summer. I pulled the plugs, put a little oil in the cyliners and put a ratchet on the front pulley. It turns just over 1/4 turn and locks. I'm getting ready to pull the valve cover and verify none of the valves are stuck since that's easy to do. It's hard to tell, but it sounds like something is hitting back in the bellhousing area when it stops. Anybody have any ideas? Like I said, I'll pull the valve cover, if valves are fine and if nobody has any ideas, I will have to take it in to a dealer, which I hate to do ($$$) but without knowing where to start digging, whether it's in the outdrive or the motor...

The valves are not the problem, that engine has a belt drive cam, and if that belt breaks while the engine is running, the pistons will not contact the open valves. It's a non interference engine.
Have you pulled the spark plugs out of the engine and tried to turn it over? That would be my first thing to try, then pull the upper gear box off the drive to eliminate the drive.

Yes, spark plugs are out. Any tips on pulling the upper gearbox? I'll do some searching on here and reading, see if I can find instructions. Thanks.

Head up to the adults only sticky at the top of this forum (second thread) and go to the Volvo Info section. There is a post there on pulling the upper gear box, with pictures.

If I turn it backwards it locks up as well. I'll look at the sticky.
