Im am considering purchasing this boat. However I am a little nervous about a noise it makes when it is put into gear. It is a volvo duo prop, that is about as much as I know. Just watch about 30 seconds into the video and let me know what you think. Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the speedy reply.

How can you tell those are the wrong props for the out drive?

Thanks for the speedy reply.

How can you tell those are the wrong props for the out drive?

Duoprops are usually three-blades, they are a matched pair with the rear usually slightly smaller than the forward prop.

When the counter-rotate they do not touch or bang agains each other...

Whoever is selling the boat does not know the outdrive well enough...

(wait till Don sees this...)

I just noticed Dons has >28k post. I cant wait for him to see this.

You think the props may be hitting each other?

Definitely.

The rear silver four blade prop is knocking the black three-blade prop...

its obvious there hitting.

i wonder if its something as simple as the front is installed back wards?

my concern now would be whether they missed the front nut or if they some how locked the props together and striped something in the front drive

mercruiser now has bravo3 prop sets with a 4 blade front and still use a 3 blade rear.

is it possible they could have used merc. b3's by mistake??

The 4 blade is supposed to be the front prop, and even so I am pretty sure only Diesel drives had a 4 blade on the front. That is totally hosed.

It's not only the props are wrong, They should be spinning at the same speed, only in opposite directions.
Not only is there a thousand dollars worth of props to be replaced, but you would need a new drive too. The gears are gone off the gear for the forward prop.
With the clanking going on, I would guess it will lock up soon.
See what happens when you tell them it needs a new outdrive and props. Bet they won't want to fix it, lower the price or anything else, just look for another sucker to buy it.

Thank you guys so much for the wisdom. (and so quickly!)

Don, what do you mean, "The gears are gone off the gear for the forward prop."?

Is there a chance that if I put the correct props on there is no damage to the drive?

It seems to me that the props are not part of the same set somehow...although replacement set can have four-blade rear props and three-blade forward props...they are usually matched in color...at least...

God knows how they are installed! Although you should be able to install the props to fit properly in only one way, when things are done wrong there is no limit to the imagination...

The props could be DP replacements, like the ones on this site
http://www.proprevs.com/

and look like these

Re: Volvo outdrive question. (with video)

tkrfxr, the series "A" and "B" props are for the older 290 and DPA style drives and are aluminum. The "A" series is for diesels and has 4 blade front prop and 3 blade rear. The "B" series has a 3 blade front prop and smaller 3 blade rear prop.

The drive in that video is the later model SX style, most of those came with stainless steel. When they first fired it up that way I am sure it did something to the shaft splines or worse, doubtful that just a new correctly installed set of props will be all it needs.

Nope, not as I see it in that short piece in the video.
The forward prop doesn't turn, then it turns with a clank, then stops again. The gears are dead and there is metal in the upper as well as the lower destroying everything else.

As far as the props, they may not be wrong, and they ARE NOT your biggest concern at this point. Look at this.

Thanks for the ID on the drive...I agree the drive is probably seriously damaged...

But what do you make of the amount of water coming out of the exhaust under the drive even before the engine was turned on...I would worry about the condition of the engine as well...The people trying to sell the boat are not to be trusted...

Like I said; RUUUNNN!!!

Blurry photos of the engine and drive (which isn't working right) but great pictures of the head.
I agree Run................

The engine sounded fine and the water coming out of the transom shield is normal. The problem is the drive, nothing else.

You are right...Looking again at the beginning of video, the engine was running, then turned off, then restarted, and as the water was running.... I thought they had let the water run long before starting the engine, which could allow the water to go where it is not intended...

My misunderstanding...

Re: Volvo outdrive question. (with video)

Although this is not the outcome I was looking for(as I had already fallen in love with this boat). I appreciate the wealth of knowledge available here and will head your warnings and run! Unless they drop another 3k off the price to pay for a new drive.
