i just bought a 2000 glastron with a 3.0 engine,it was in dry storage and shrinkwrapped for 2 years before i bought it. took it out on the lake for a 45 minute shakedown cruise all ok. next day took family out for fun and tubing ran about 1 1/2 hours last 20 minutes pulling the tube never ran at full throttle. as i went to pull in a tuber, i shut engine down so they could come aboard and when i turned toward the engine there was smoke coming from the engine compartment. when i looked it was coming from the lower exhaust pipe below the rubber connector, it looks like something melted down this pipe. temp gauge said about 210 so i let it sit for about 45 minutes and then it started but was hard to start started to run slow and temp. started to rise so i shut it down and got towed in. an hour later at the dock engine still would not start.this is my first i/o does this i/o have a waterpump in the outdrive? it does have a water pump mounted on the side of the engine. and i think there is one on the front of the engine but i'm not sure. i'm still at the lake so i can't get a service manual out here. does anyone have any ideas about what it could be. btw the engine does turn over and i pulled # 1 plug and found nothing unusual. thanks

Re: volvo overheating

Hi windjammer,

Could you identify the model (aq###)?

The 3.0L has the raw water pump mounted on the crankshaft (front). Most VP 3.0L were standard with RWC but FWC was an option, what have you got?

Aldo

Re: volvo overheating

windjammer,

I myself own a Glastron 2002 with a 3.0. These engines do have a raw water pump system on them. I ran into the same problem and the first thing that I would check is the impeller. My boat sat up for the winter and I took it out just as you described. When I finally opened it up it overheated. They checked the impeller and it was toast. I would strongly recommend that you have this checked before running the boat anymore. My boat also overheated so much that I cracked the exhaust manifold. $989.00 mistake. The impeller will run about $150.00 bucks to repair. I hope this helps.

i have raw water cooling. is the impeller in the outdrive or in the raw water pump? if so can the impeller be changed or does the whole pump have to be replaced? thanks

Re: volvo overheating

SX drive. No pump in the outdrive, its on the front of the crankshaft. Impeller can be changed or the whole pump, need to check to see if the impeller housing is damaged.

Aldo
