I was wondering if anybody would know the part number for the exhaust hose on a 1971 volvo penta 170aq? It has a 250 outdrive. Do I have to talk to volvo to get that part or is there a company that makes a reproduction? Also need the same for the impeller housing gasket and a thermostat kit. Can someone help me out? My other question is what weight/brand of oil and filter is recommended for this engine. I need to change it some time this week and would like to hear some thoughts. Thanks

Re: Volvo penta 170aq questions

As it has a flat tappet cam, you need to use a heavy-duty oil such as Delo 400 or Rotella T, and I would use a straight 30 weight.

Holy Crap!!!:eek: - - if there was a steady market for the exhaust hose at a hundred bucks for a four inch section - that would mean that I could sell it at $300/foot :D.

A nice term for that is "usery". IMO, there are better ways to say that you would rather not carry a certain product. Here's someone who wants to make a living the honest way: http://www.boatbandit.com/23~marine-hoses.aspx

For the thermostat, it's better to look at alternate sources. Here's a Sierra equivelant: http://www.iboats.com/mall/partfinder/?*******=514891419&gd_grid_id=1081&gd_poid=111063&gd_row=26&**********=424681342

It's one of the challenges of having an older engine that's out of production. It's not impossible to get replacement parts, just somewhat inconvenient at times. Good part is that it learn how to use your imagination with internet search terms. ;)

DonS was nice enough to host a site for the manuals. VP recommendations and specs for oil and filter will be there: http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?p=2360521#post2360521

I happen to like a straight 30W and a Wix filter. Most auto parts stores can get the filter for you the next day.
