I have an '85 Bayliner 1950 Capri BR w/ VP AQ125A / 270 I/O. With lots of love & care since new it's all in great shape, runs great, and we still enjoy it. Today I noticed the caulk around the outdrive housing on the transom is turning dark in places and has a crack running lengthwise around the bottom 1/2. It's not leaking -- yet. Has anyone been successful in using a sealant over the caulk to extend the time before it has to be removed and completely resealed? If so, what was the product. Advise appreciated -- we are leaving for a week at the lake, soon!

Ayuh,... You can try sealing it with 4200 sealant,...
But,...
When that happens,... It's Usually because the transom is Rotten...

Re: Volvo-Penta 270 transom seal

We've had the boat in storage for the last 5 years with no use. I'm hoping it's just the outside caulk has aged, dried out and showing a hairline crack -- but maybe I'm just being wishful.

Are there other signs of "rot" that I should look for? Nothing appears obvious, but perhaps I don't know what to look for.

Update: Volvo-Penta 270 transom seal

I checked the bolts that hold the outdrive to the transom and found that I could tighten all of them a bit without experiencing any "squish" on the inside of the transom. Hope this means no rot in the transom and loose bolts is possible cause of the caulk showing barely perceptible crack in center of the bead. Thanks for the suggestion to use 4200 sealant - I think I'll give it a go.

Am I being unrealistically optimistic?
