I have a 1986 capri 1950. It has the AQ225e and 275 drive. When sitting still or idling around, i can turn the steering wheel with my pinky in either direction..or if its on the trailer, same thing, effortless. When going down the lake wide open it also steers easily, but when just cruising, it is hard to turn the steering wheel the opposite way that the prop is spinning and it sucks! When pulling the kids on the tube and going in figure 8's or in a big circle i have to muscle it with both hands when turning against the prop. I have adjusted the exhaust fin it changed some but still hard. Wish it had power steering. My parents came to the lake with us this weekend and Dad drove it so i could get on the tube for once and i loved it! I want my wife to be able to drive this thing so i can tube with the kids some but she cant turn it. It already has a left handed prop..Is there anything i can do or buy to help with this issue? This cant be good for the steering cable..?

You should have a trim tab on the back of the drive. Loosen it and turn the front part of the tab in the direction you want to make it easier.

I have done that. It was 2 years ago but if I remember right it just changed the RPM range that it steered hard in. seemed like before it steered hard idling around slow and when I adjusted the tab, it steered easy idling around but hard when in midrange..

Adjust it for the speed where you have the worst torque steer which is usually at higher speeds.

I am trying to remember if Volvo ever had power steering on these 275 drives.

Bayliner did not put power steering on many 275 drives behind V8s

Any more things i can do to help it without adding power steering? Obviously this has to be really hard on the steering cable also and i dont need it breaking on me out in the water..

Another guy recommended getting the Teleflex zero feedback steering setup. He said it helped this problem with his 2 boats but I have no idea what part # kit I need for my boat..

Watching this closely. I have the exact same boat with this same issue. Please post anything you find to fix it.

Someone else is recommending the seastar hydraulic steering system and it looks the best of all, but don't know how to get the correct kit number for this boat/drive combo...?

Also watching this thread and I also have the same problem. 21' Bayliner with a 275 outdrive. Wonder if there is even a cheap fix for this

Got to do something! A VERY knowledgeable guy on BOC forum said the problem was the exhaust outlet that also acts as the adjustment for this problem is too small and you could weld a bigger fin to it but im leary of welding anything to tht and don't know how much to add, but it is a good idea if could figure out the dimensions to add.
