Volvo Penta 275 Trim

On my boat I just got this year the trim switch on the accelerator doesn't work. When I look up inside there I see two wires coming off of it and just zip tied to it.
I do have a switch to raise and lower the out drive for trailering that works though.
Is there a place for me to run the two wires to then? If so does anyone have a picture or diagram of what I am looking at?

Thanks,
Mike

Re: Volvo Penta 275 Trim

Your outdrive doesn't have power trim. Your control handle is made for an outdrive with power trim.

Like you said you only have a tilt mechanism for trailering and idling in forward in shallow water. Be gentle with your tilt mech. They can be troublesome and expensive if they are abused. For trailering buy a bracket that supports the outdrive. There's a good one on ebay. Here it is.

I do have the support for it.
Can I add power trim or is it just not worth it on a boat this old?

There is no practical way to add power trim. You would have to replace the entire outdrive and transom shield etc.

I've accepted that I do not have power trim and cannot benefit from the performance help it provides. The older Volvo outdrives were great outdrives and can last for a long time with proper maintenance.

Are you finding the performance of your boat to be lacking? What boat and engine are you running?

The boat performs great.
Its got a 350 on it so motor isn't a problem.
I just like the idea to be able to adjust the trim to get that little bit extra.
From what you are saying, it doesn't sound worth it to try to add it.
Thanks for the info.

Re: Volvo Penta 275 Trim

Last week, a friend's boat, a 1995 Four Winns 258 with a Volvo Penta blew a trim hose. The marina mechanic said it is because they used the trim to adjust tilt while underway and that they should not do that.

My Cobalt with Mercruiser owners manual says to adjust the trim tilt while underway for optimum operation and I do it all the time. My USPS boating course said to adjust it as well.

Is this mechanic correct about a Penta?

You're right! It's an expensive fix and Volvo no longer makes the hose.

Adding a note: I downloaded the Four Winns Owners manual and it says to adjust the trim tilt to maintain a 5-6 degree planing angle contrary to what the mechanic said.
