Hey to all. Just got the boat back in the water, had the head gasket and the riser gasket replaced since it blew few weeks ago. It blew due to overheating. So far i have replaced the following items: The rubber graumets in the outdrive around the water tube, the impeller in the fresh water pump and cleared all the hoses. With the thermostat it got hot faster so i took it out. In the water at idle it runs cold but within 2 min running at 4k it goes to 180 and above. When returned to idle it cools off within few min. Help help help.

Does this engine have a full model or serial number?

Howdy,

If the engine doesn't overheat at idle, but does at higher power settings....... In general.... that's usually indicative of poor cooling water flow........I.E, it's enough at idle but not enough at higher power settings.....

Raw pump, distribution hoses, oil/pS cooler, and/or plugged (with rust) block, head(s), manifold, riser(s) or plugged/obstructed water pick-up.

Rick

Any suggestions on how to flush out the block, head and the intake exhaust manifold. I already flushed and eliminated all the hoses and water intake along with the oil cooler. They are all clear.

If the exhaust manifold or riser are plugged up, they need replaced. You can pull the riser off the manifold and look at the water passages (or post some pictures).
Here is also some tests to do before you take things apart.

When you had the outdrive apart, was that s shaped water tube between the upper and lower SS or Copper? I have seen the copper ones corrode small holes through them and cause an air leak to the raw water pump when on plane.

I took everything apart and flushed it with water all is clear. When i took the riser off i noticed that the ss spacer between the gaskets only has one slot cut out for the water to come out of. Does anyone know why.

Why, I couldn't tell you, but they have been like that since Volvo started using the 3.0L. It is not your problem.

Re: Volvo penta 3.0 overheating!!!!!

Finally got back to the boat. I have done all the tests as decsribed in the volvo penta overheating diag manual. All the tests were passed with out the problem being resolved. I finally took the boat to a local shop and after about 30 min the tech removed the ss plate from the exhaust riser charged me $65 for time and labor and send me on my way. I ran the boat almost 1.5 hrs from wot to mid back and forth the temp never gor to 175. Any input will be greatly appreciated. What the heck did i miss and most importantly should the ss plate be in there or not.???

My guess, either the riser or the manifold is plugged up and needs replaced. That SS plate is still used. By removing it, all that happened is the water then had an extra passage to get out of the boat but something is mostly plugged up.
