I traded for a 97 campion 505vri that had the motor removed and was never replaced(it was a 3.0l volvo penta gs). Its been pretty hard to find a replacement volvo penta 3.0l gs bobtail(sx cobra leg on the boat now). I have looked into replacing the motor with a merc and ive heard a few different/conflicting stories for replacing the motor.

Just a few question..

1. Can i put in a 3.0l merc..what is required to convert(manifolds, etc)
2. Any recommended company to buy a 3.0l volvo from
3. What other volvo penta motors will fit this leg? Seems to be a lot of older pentas out there..

Im new to boating..any help would be great..

Re: Volvo Penta 3.0L GS motor replacement

I'm sure you could put in a merc but i would think it would be cheaper to stick with volvo, merc wiring, cables, cooling system and such are different. at that point you minus well just do a complete re-power so you dont have a micky mouse merc N' volvo setup. Sure you could strap a 350 to that leg but the motor mounts are different on the v engines and so will all cables

The 3.0L engine that is used by Mercruiser and Volvo are identical engines.

You will need the Volvo manifolds and raw water pump as well as any wiring that is missing.
